New decree with regard to the prevention of legionella
On Friday 18 July 2008, the Flemish government, represented by Minister Steven Vanackere, Flemish Minister of Health and Family Welfare, officially announced that 'thermal disinfection' may be replaced by the environmentally friendly alternative Ecodis technology.
Institutions such as hospitals, sports centres, hotels etc. have to dispose of a legionella policy. The only technique that was recognised in the Legionella Decree of 2007 was 'thermal disinfection', whereby mains water is heated to approx. 60°C in order to kill the bacteria in the water. In the new decree, Minister Vanackere offers an alternative control measure to disinfect pipes.
Preventive water treatment has never been more topical and is increasingly becoming a priority. Between 1996 and 2006, the number of legionella infections, also known as Legionnaires' disease, has more than sextupled, as shown from the figures from the European Working Group for Legionella Infections (www.ewgli.org). Research closer to home also confirms this trend. A recent study in the Netherlands shows that Legionnaires' disease is the most common lung condition in the 35 to 49 year age group.
One of the main causes of this deadly disease: infection of mains water. Bacteria such as legionella multiply in the biofilm on the inside of the pipes. When infected water atomises and small drops of water are inhaled, an actual risk of infection is imposed.
This is possible for example with mains water (when using showers), professional processes (when rinsing food), air conditioning and cooling towers.
The Ecodis® technology, based on anodic oxidation, kills bacteria, viruses, algae and micro-organisms in the water and water mains, without the addition of chemicals, salts or heavy metals, and without warming up the water. This applies to both warm and cold water networks. From now on, our technology offers an alternative control measure as part of the Legionella Decree of 09/02/2007.
